You most certainly can, and (I think) you just did. I managed to work my way around most of them, by the klutzy Fixes for which I seem to have a certain talent, but I sure _wish_ the LJ people would learn the prinicple of "If it ain't broke....".

What changed? I haven't noticed anything. But I usually come in to LJ through a bookmark that takes me right to the "old" friends page, so maybe I bypassed the "improvements?"

I steadfastly told LJ I didn't want to try the new interface, and it eventually gave up on me. What has changed?

Yes, "steadfast resistance" seems to be the key -- but apparently it has to be repeated again and again each time LJ institlutes a new "improvement" (that is, they haven't given up on me, they've still not adopted the "opt in" approach). I don't know about other of their customers, but I don't think _anyone_ I know who's active on LJ has adopted these Changes (with the possible exception of the one that allows a choice of multiple userpics) , so I don't quite understand why they keep introducing them.
