Anniversaries
Oct. 17th, 2007 08:12 pmThe following is from a post by George Gray to the comp.sys.unisys newsgroup:
2007 is 50th anniversary of shipment of Athena, the first UNIVAC
transistor computer.
This fall is 45th anniversary of first UNIVAC 1107 shipment to CSC in
California.
2007 is also the 40th anniversary of Exec 8 entering production use.
The OS I write/support is Exec 8, renamed (typical Univac/Sperry/Unisys management - someone else trademarked the name Exec 8, so we had to rename the OS). It runs on the descendants of the 1107.
The architecture is very likely the oldest currently shipping architecture - programs that ran on the 1107, back in the day, could still run, unmodified, on our current machines.
