Hypothesis:

Shoveling the sidewalks is a useful technique for staving off an incipient migraine.

Result:

It depends upon what the meaning of "useful" is.

I didn't stave off the migraine. But the walks did get shoveled.

I don't know what you mean. How could I know that shoveling the sidewalks doesn't work at staving off migraines if I don't test it out?

How would I know if a pie was yummy or not without testing it out?
