Oddly enough, we were out Thursday and Friday seeing a movie and a play. Even odder, both movie and play were set in the late 60's.

[livejournal.com profile] mizzlaurajean got three free passes from her writer's group to see Chicago 10 on Thursday night. We used one of the passes, [livejournal.com profile] lsanderson used another one, and the third ended up being left at the counter for whoever might want to make use of it. The three of us walked to the theater, dodging the many mini-lakes that have sprung up along the way. Our first Walkies of the year, as it were. I enjoyed the movie, despite its flaws. I tend to think the flaws were inherent in the subject matter - the movie tried to impose a structure upon the events, but the imposed structure dissolved at roughly the same point that structure broke down in real life (i.e., when the police riot happened). It's somewhat discouraging to look at what happened then versus what happened in New York in 2004. Lessons were learned, but they appear to have been learned by the authoritarian types. I think there is a definite value in going to see this movie, especially given the impending Republican National Convention happening across the river.

Last night we went to The Illusion Theater to see Mrs Mannerly. The premise seemed dubious (a play about a kid going to a class on manners/etiquette in 1967 Steubenville, Ohio), but the actors involved promised the result would be interesting. The play turned out to be much better than I could have expected, and much, much funnier than I expected. I'd certainly recommend that people see the play before it closes - it's good.

What else has been going on - let's see, Tuesday I blew off exercising and took [livejournal.com profile] mizzlaurajean to Barnes & Noble. Financially, not a wise move. I did manage to acquire the collected novels of Jane Austen, just like Grigg in The Jane Austen Book Club. Unfortunately, the book was commandeered once we got home, and it's not clear when I'll regain possession. I suppose I should finish The Jane Austen Book Club first.

Tomorrow, I may (or may not) be going to see Bruce Springsteen (many thanks to my friends who gifted me with a ticket to the event). I'm a little apprehensive - it's been an exceedingly long time since I've gone to such a show, and my ears aren't getting any younger. We shall see.
