I went to the Community Issues meeting tonight.

Items of interest:

1) Minneapolis seems to be trying real hard to become a European city. Not only is Open Streets on for June 12, but the weekend preceding will see Northern Spark, which is apparently our take on Nuit Blanche. For one night only, from sunset on June 4 (2055) until sunrise on June 5 (0528), more than 60 regional and national artists together with the Twin Cities' arts community will display new art installations at public places, galleries, and unexpected locations throughout the Cities.

2) 5th Precinct Open House the evening of May 19th, featuring bomb squads, K-9 squads, SWAT teams, horses, and a State Patrol Helicopter.

3) US Internet, those fine folk providing the WiFi network in Minneapolis, will be putting fiber optic cable into a couple of Minneapolis neighborhoods. Some residents will be able to connect directly to the Fiber Backbone of the network. People signing on to this service can get speeds ranging from 15Mbps to 100 Mbps at rates ranging from $24.90/mo to $40.90/mo.
The fiber optic installation will only go as far south as 24the Street, leaving Harriet Manor in the Wireless Wasteland...:-(
