Fudge Taste-Off
Sep. 18th, 2008 09:17 pmI mentioned previously that I'd received a package from
s6b. When I got the package home, I opened up the package (this is for values of home that include sitting in the car in the Unisys parking lot), and found the following explanation:
"As for what's below in the box, it's part of a batch of fudge I made using my former landlady's recipe. You may recall me mentioning to you earlier this year that she gave me some fudge that was much softer than Mom's, something that was almost like chocolate flavored butter. I asked you if you'd be interested in trying some if I managed to get the recipe from her. Well, I did, ..."
"Personally, I'm still partial to Mom's version, but as I said before, the landlady's has an interesting texture. I discovered the reason the landlady's version resembles chocolate flavored butter is because that's basically what it is. Also, the landlady's version is a bit more bitter than Mom's because the former recipe calls for more chocolate."
Ok. I took the one remaining slab of Mom's fudge out of the refrigerator this morning, and carried both types of fudge into work for a fudge taste-off.
The results? From the comments, there was a pretty much universal preference for Mom's fudge over the landlady's. The only non-anonymous comment received (from Linda Brock) was "The landlady's fudge was not worthy of being applied by Lewis directly to the thighs of the female engineers."
Even more telling, all of Mom's fudge was devoured, and there's still some of the landlady's fudge left.
I think Mom still retains her title of "World's Greatest Cook" as far as Unisys Roseville is concerned.
And thanks for the fudge.
