Aug. 6th, 2002 11:59 pmI was up late talking on Wednesday night last week, and I had to get up early for an appointment that was scheduled for 7:15 am. By mid-afternoon, the exhaustion led to a big emotional meltdown. I was convinced that I had no friends, that I was totally alone in the world. But several of my friends stepped up, and helped me through. Much thanks to Larry, and Laurel, and Joyce.
I had a semi-annual haircut scheduled for Friday at 12:45. Went well. Joyce, who's been cutting my hair for years now, and I discussed our current relationship problems. Afterward, I picked up Rachael and gave her a ride to Diversicon. We registered, wandered about for a bit, then I went back to work. I went back to Diversicon after work -spotted Laurel and Kevin playing Fluxx at the table next to the one Rachael was reading at. Rachael showed off the ring she had bought. I tried to arrange a dinner expedition - Laurel and Kevin demurred (they were waiting for Dean and Laura to arrive), but Rachael, Larry and I eventually headed out to Mirror of Korea. Joyce eventually met us there. Had a nice dinner, with good company. When we got back to the convention, I went to a reading by Tina Jens and Laurel Winter. Very good, both of them. I was at the beginning of a panel on Chuck Jones, but left when it became glaringly apparent that the panel was too lame to bear. Sat in the lobby talking with Doug Friauf, Rachael, and Larry until late. Then went home to bed.
I got up relatively late Saturday morning. I felt much more exhausted than I really should. Eventually, I headed out to Byerly's to pick up party supplies. The first thing I picked up was an XL Mocha, which promptly retaliated by picking me up. Bought a Potica, grapes, cherries, some Diet Coke, some beer, and ice. Then went home and packed it all up. Went by Rachael's to give her a ride. We observed that neither of us had really eaten all day, so we stopped and had a bite to eat. Eventually made it to Diversicon around 4:30, where we promptly ran into Larry. This led to a lot of effort in moving the car, unloading the car, trying to help Larry set up the room party, and generally being old and in the way.
I think it was the aftermath of Thursday, I really didn't go to anything at Diversicon other than the room party. I spent the time quietly sitting around just enjoying being with my friends. Laura and Rachael and I spent a little time in the spa, which pretty well boiled the alcohol out of me. Larry did a wonderful job on the party, as usual. It finally shut down around 2:00 am, and I headed out.
When I got up Sunday, I felt sufficiently wiped out that I didn't even try to make the last day of Diversicon. I just puttered around.
I enjoyed Diversicon, as I usually do, but something vital was missing this year. That would be Joe and Andrew - I really missed seeing them at Diversicon. It's just not the same without them...
